‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’ sweeps National Film Awards
Sanjay Dutt starrer Lage Raho Munnabhai which brought forward ‘Gandhigiri’ by imploring the values of Mahatma Gandhi, swept the 54th National Film Awards for 2006, by winning four honors along with the best popular film. It has became the first Hindi film sequel to repeat the feat of winning the award as Munnabhai MBBS had got the same honor in 2003.
Veteran Bengali film actor Soumitra Chatterjee won the best actor award for the Bengali film ‘Podokkhep’, whereas Tamil actress Priyamani received the best actress award for the film Paruthiveeran .
Madhur Bhandarkar won the best director award for his movie Traffic Signal. On the other hand, Khosla Ka Ghosla bagged the award for the best Hindi film. The director of Malayalam film Priyanandanan won the honor for the best feature film, ‘Pulijanmam’.
Kabul Express directed by Kabir Khan shared the Indira Gandhi award with Madhu Kaithapuram’s Malayalam film ‘Ekantham’ for the best first film of a director.
Announcing the winners of the 54th National Film Awards 2006, chairman of the jury for feature films, Budhhadeb Dasgupta told that ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’ won awards for other categories as well like best lyrics (Swanand Kirkire), best screenplay ( Rajkumar Hirani , Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Abhijat Joshi), and best supporting actor (Dilip Prabhavalkar, who featured Mahatma Gandhi in the film) who also won the award for the best supporting actor for Marathi film ‘Shevri’.
The director of Omkara, Vishal Bharadwaj got the Special Jury award for making an outstanding film. Konkona Sen Sharma received the best supporting actress for Omkara. K J Singh and Subhash Sahoo won the best audiography award.
Punjabi film ‘Waris Shah-Ishq Da Waris’, a portrayal of the rich, musical, Sufi tradition, has received four national awards for the best film in Punjabi, best art direction (Rashid Rangrez), best costume designer (Manjit Mann) and best male playback singer for Gurdas Mann. After the release of the film in late 2006, the young director Manoj Punj unfortunately had died.
The best female playback singer award has received by vocalist Aarti Anklekar Tikekar for Konkani film ‘Antarnad’, who also added bonanza into her life by receiving the best music direction award for Ashok Patki, as also the best feature film in Konkani.
The filmmaker Amol Palekar has directed the English film ‘Quest’ who received the best film in the language.
